Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre—January 29, 2010
I went the see Shakespeare’s Globe on Friday with my friends Nathan and Sonya. Now, the way I feel about the Beatles is the equivalent to the way Nathan feels about Shakespeare, so it was really fun to watch him freak out. He says that seeing The Globe is something he’s wanted to do since second grade (he was a cool child). And sure, The Globe today is not the same one as in Shakespeare’s time seeing as the original was burned down after the thatched roofing caught fire when they fired a canon during Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, but that makes this one no less incredible. It’s beautiful! They’ve done a great job at reconstructing the theatre. You really get a sense of what it might have been like to see a Shakespeare play in his time. On the ground in front of the stage there is where the groundlings stood—those were the poor people who would pay a penny to get in and watched the play on foot, even leaning on the stage, heckling the actors. The new season starts up again in the spring before I leave. I’m there!
